Today I got to explore the Preservation Department and meet some of the fabulous people who work up there. The department does repairs on all materials from all collections in the library (save media), and have lots of nifty gadgets! It’s clear the staff take good care of the materials and the collection, and make sure they are well-preserved so they can last a long time. They even do repairs on special collections materials before they are digitized.
I was also able to see the mysterious “dirt room.” The dirt room is a huge room in the basement used for compact storage, extra furniture storage, and some other things behind cages that I didn’t ask about. Apparently, this room used to have a dirt floor, but thankfully, now as the home of some books and electronics, the dirt floor has been covered over with cement. It’s amazing what can be hidden away in various places of the library!
