COL Discussion with ALA President-Elect

COL Retreat, ALA Midwinter, January 19, 2012.

My first real experience with the COL was at the retreat held before the Midwinter Meeting. There, I heard from ALA President Elect Maureen Sullivan, and got my first introduction to the structure and struggles of ALA. Sullivan stressed the idea of the ALA unifying and amplifying its voice and having a strategic focus. This theme was quickly adopted by COL and reiterated throughout the Midwinter experience. Sullivan noted that we need more friends in the U.S. Congress, and we need to educate Congressmen, ALA members, and the American public about the importance of libraries. Particularly in regards to the recent SOPA/PIPA legislation, many people do not always realize why issues such as these are important to libraries!
